Disassembly of a 20 m high steel structure with 51 m span and 20 m width.

For the dismantling of a 20 m high self-supporting steel structure with 51 m span and 20 m width which rests on the front side of the existing building, two of our larger cranes were in operation for about 2 months: the LTM 1400-7.1 with 100 t counter weight and luffing jib, 46.3 m HA + 35 m (later conversion to 70 m luffig jib) and a AC 500-2 with 160 t counter weight and WIHISSL, 47.2 m HA with guying and 72 m luffing jib. An interfering edge at 55 m height had to be taken into account and steel parts up to 12 t had to be lifted at a radius of 72 m. Due to the self-supporting construction and statics, the steel structure was only dismantled from top to bottom.

First, the facade of the steel structure was dismantled using the 400 t crane and short luffing jib to remove the front elements. Then, it was converted to a 70 m luffing jib to dismantle the rear elements. After the 500 t crane was erected, the large steel components were lifted – and the LTM 1400 acted as the auxiliary crane to bring the workers in the man basket to the ports at which the AC 500 lifted the heavy parts.

The limited space was one challenge: for both cranes was only 30 x 20 m available. The luffing jib was set up on the access road, only then could the cranes move to the working position and then be ballasted there. In addition, the cranes could only be erected and dismantled one after the other and only on Saturdays or at night. However, the two large cranes have successfully completed their work at the heat and power plant HKW Süd om the Isar river in Munich and are looking forward to continuing the project soon.
